MenCare+ Indonesia promotes men’s involvement through programming and integrated campaigns in its final year

MenCare Indonesia’s MenCare+ program came to a close in February 2016, concluding three years of successfully engaging men in caregiving, health, and nonviolence.

The MenCare+ Indonesia program not only worked directly with young men, young fathers, and their partners, but also used an integrated campaign strategy to raise broader awareness about the importance of men’s active participation in caregiving and domestic work.

In the final year of the initiative, MenCare+ Indonesia promoted its messaging through on-air broadcasts, promo spots, radio reports, and a mini “talk show” with fathers and children. In late 2015 and early 2016, the initiative also produced two public service announcements (PSAs) on men’s involvement in family planning and maternal, newborn, and child health.

The first PSA shows the importance of men’s support for their partners during pregnancy and birth – including their presence in the delivery room:

The second PSA shares the message, “One of the keys to a happy family is a husband who is willing to participate in family planning”:

A three-year, four-country collaboration between Rutgers and Promundo, with support from the Dutch Ministry for Foreign Affairs, MenCare+ has sought to engage men aged 15 to 35 as partners in maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) and in sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Programming, campaigns, and advocacy efforts have worked together with the aim of promoting SRHR, improving MNCH, preventing gender-based violence, and encouraging gender equality more broadly.
